Highlights from the Mento Builder’s Workshop and cKES Innovate Hackathon
We had an amazing turnout for the Mento cKES Innovate Hackathon with 99 participants building over 15 projects! We’d also like to share our gratitude to those involved in the hackathon for their valuable support, from the mentors to the judges, and our partners on the ground, Celo Africa DAO and Haraka.
During the workshop, we introduced cKES, the first decentralized local currency stablecoin in Kenya tracking the Kenya Shilling, designed to provide a secure and stable medium of exchange for users in Kenya. Built on the Mento Platform on the Celo blockchain, cKES offers endless opportunities for builders to innovate and create real-world solutions in the DeFi space.

We are pleased to announce the top finalists who stood out with their innovative projects:
Exion Finance: Exion is a mobile dApp that allows users to send and receive crypto, pay for utilities, and convert crypto to fiat seamlessly. The dApp supports cKES and cUSD stablecoins, ensuring that transactions are smooth and transparent on the Celo network. Users can send crypto, and the recipient receives it in the form of fiat, directly usable for daily expenses or bill payments.
Chama Pay: Chama Pay allows users to create public and private “chamas” (rotary savings groups) and save using cKES stablecoins. Members contribute a fixed amount after a fixed period of time, and funds are distributed to participants on a rotating basis. Public chamas are open to anyone, while private chamas are limited to friends and family. The platform manages the entire process, from member approval to fund disbursement, using smart contracts to ensure transparency and fairness.
Disperse: Disperse is a user-friendly application designed to simplify the process of distributing cKES (Celo Kenya Shilling) to multiple addresses in one efficient transaction. Think of it as a tool for managing airdrops or bulk payments with ease. Whether distributing rewards, making mass payments, or running a promotion, Disperse allows users to send cKES to multiple users simultaneously in a single, streamlined transaction, eliminating the need for manual transfers to each individual address. This ensures cost and time efficiency, making it an ideal solution for projects or organizations looking to maximize the impact of their airdrop campaigns or decentralized payment solutions.
